SBAE Industries NV is operating at the crossroads of biological and engineering expertise in the area of algae and algae based products. It has developed a unique capacity to produce a large range of micro-algae in industrial quantities and applies processes that are sustainable, natural and clean.
The company has developed both indoor and outdoor algae growing platforms, each tailored toward specific applications. The indoor photo bioreactors are ideal for mass production of specific algae monocultures for high value applications such as aquaculture feed for fish larvae. The outdoor DiaforceTM patented system enables mass production of algae polycultures, and allows for efficient harvesting and post processing.
The company was founded in 2006 and is funded by a mix of business angels and investment funds. It is located in Waarschoot, Belgium and currently employs 20 people.
Speaker Profile
Marc Van Aken has a background in high technology companies, both early and later stage. In the nineties, he was involved in the start-up of Internet Service Provider UUNET in the Benelux, where he held a number of roles in marketing, sales and general management. Later he moved on to become VP Strategic Marketing for UUNET in EMEA.
Since 2004, Marc has been working with university researchers to help them start their own company based on their knowledge and expertise. Over 30 new high tech companies were created since. He has been working with Dr Koen Vanhoutte, the founder of SBAE Industries, from the early days in setting up the company and joined SBAE Industries as CEO in 2008.
Marc holds an MSc in electronic engineering, a master in management, a diploma in social research methods and a bachelor in philosophy from the universities of Leuven and Brussels in Belgium and from the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK. He is on the board of several high tech companies and a frequent presenter at industry events.
