Dr. Ulrike Schmid-Staiger has a Biology degree from Tübingen, Germany and completed her diploma and doctorate at the Institute for Biotechnology 1 in Jülich, Germany.
Since 1988, Dr. Schmid-Staiger is a scientific researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB in Stuttgart and head of the Algae Biotechnology Group in the Department of Environmental Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering. She has been working with microalgae for more than 14 years.
Her research areas are:
- development of a photobioreactor for mass cultivation of microalgae,
- screening and selection of microalgae and cyanobacteria,
- development of photoautotrophic processes for microalgae and cyanobacteria in flat-panel airlift reactors from laboratory to technical plant scale and
- development of processes for the isolation of algal products.
She is the co-founder of the Fraunhofer spin-off Subitec GmbH to commercialize photobioreactor technology for mass production of microalgae.
