Dr. Hywel Griffiths is the Chief Scientific Officer for Photonz. He received his degree and PhD from the University of Cambridge, having focused on molecular microbiology, and did postdoctoral research in Uppsala, Sweden and Aberystwyth, Wales before setting off travelling around the world.
One wife, and three children later, he is happily settled in New Zealand. Since 2006, he has been leading an ever-expanding process development team at Photonz, a job which, at times, has encompassed electrical engineering, plumbing, programming, building, steam engineering and the occasional bit of lipid chemistry and microbiology. He is inventor on several of the company’s patents so appears to have had a few good ideas along the way too.
Photonz has developed a continuous fermentation process for production of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA from marine microalgae with a special focus on high-purity EPA for medical markets. The company expects to go into industrial-scale production later this year.
