ALGAL BIOENERGY ROUNDTABLE

09:05  Growing, Harvesting, Dewatering & Extraction: Getting the Whole Process Right
- For efficient and cost effective production of algal biofuels, the whole process must be optimised and all steps are interrelated
- The nature of the algae species dictates the harvesting and dewatering process which can be used
- As the water must be recycled the harvesting options are limited
- The oil extraction process will affect the degree of dewatering required
Speaker: Prof. Michael Borowitzka, Biofuels Manager of Renewable Energy Research Institute / Head, Algae Research, Murdoch University

09:35 Economic Feasibility of Oil Extraction and Purification from Algae Biomass
Speaker: Kevin Drumm, Business Development Director, Solution Recovery Services

10:05 Botryococcus’s Potential for Biofuel Production

10:35 Discussion followed by Refreshments

11:05 Feasibility and Technology of Algal Biodiesel Production Using CO2 from Flue Gas
Speaker: Dr. Minsheng Liu, Director, Bioenergy Institute, ENN Science & Technology Development Co. Ltd., ENN Group

11:35  Waste-Water Based Algae-Energy-System
- Waste-water treatment system that is stand-alone and can be coupled to conventional waste-water treatment facilities for the digestion of effluent and/or residual sludge with biogas as a bi-product.
- The reward for biogas production, harvesting, and utilization is metered against the reduction in per annum costs associated with the municipal utilization of fossil fuel energy.
- Optimization of the algae system is by use of co-feedstocks to maintain the requisite C:N ration, and by controlling the influent rate and system hydraulics.
- The resultant algae biomass is harvested and valorised to provide standardized products and specific-attribute raw materials for differentiated markets and/or processed further by digestion to enhance biogas production and the energy potential of the integrated system.
Speaker: Prof. Ashton Keith Cowan, Director, Environmental Biotechnology, Rhodes University

12:05  Biorefinery Approach for Algal Biofuels and High Value Co-Products
Speaker: Rob Thomas, Chair, Algal Fuel Consortium
