Speaker Profile: Gideon Richards, Chief Executive Officer, Consulting With Purpose

Gideon Richards has consulted across a wide range of industry sectors, for both large and small organisations as a change management, business development and environmental management consultant. Over the last 7 years Gideon has spent an increasing amount of time working with clients on biomass related projects such as assessing the financial viability of major projects, resource identification and fuel supply chain development, quality assurance and standards work.
Gideon sits on a number of UK, European and International technical committees for the development of standards for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, with a particular interest in Solid Biofuels and Solid Recovered fuels. He is currently the chair of the BSI’s Technical Committee for Solid Biofuels and Solid Recovered Fuel Standards and is Convenor of Working Group 3 Fuel Quality Assurance for ISO TC238 Solid Biofuels Standards and is involved with the CEN and ISO Biofuels Sustainability Standards.
Gideon is also the Chair of the Steering Group for the UK’s MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme).

Caroline Midgley, PhD, is Team Leader with the Biofuels and Biomass Research Team at LMC International, a firm providing economic, marketing, and consulting services for a broad range of industries related to agricultural commodities and their downstream derivatives.
Supported by LMC’s grains, oilseeds, sugar and starch teams, Dr. Midgley is responsible for LMC’s biofuels and biomass work. This work includes investment appraisal projects for new plants, assessing the impact of changes in domestic biofuel/biomass policies, analysis of raw material and by-product markets and an analysis of the impact of technological developments within the biofuels/biomass sector.
Prior to working for LMC International she was a commodity analyst for ED & F Man Sugar Limited.

Yves Ryckmans graduated from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, and conducted a PhD study at the same university on modeling heat transfer in furnaces by finite elements techniques.
In 1989, he joined Laborelec research Centre of Electrabel as a research engineer in the field of nuclear energy. From 1996 on, he initiated the development of fixed bed gasification and CFB gasification of wood through several Belgian and European projects. In 1999 he became Head of the Biomass Competence Centre of Electrabel at Laborelec.
This competence centre covers more than 15 years technical issues like co-firing biomass in pulverised-coal power plants, biomass gasification, biomass fuel quality, biogas applications and biomass sustainability verification. His R&D efforts were focused on CFD modeling of PC boilers, slagging and fouling, NOx and SOx emissions, biomass milling and upgrading, ESP, ash quality and utilisation, as well as the verification of sustainability criteria for solid biomass.
Currently, Yves Ryckmans is Chief Technology Officer Biomass at Laborelec. As such, he is managing research and services for bio-energy applications within GDF SUEZ Group.

Jeppe Bjerg is Senior Innovation Manager at DONG Energy R&D responsible for the long term portfolio on bioenergy.
DONG Energy is a private integrated energy company with an annual turnover of appr. 8 billion EURO with The Danish Government as main shareholder. DONG Energy has for the last decades been using straw, wood chips and pellets for efficient small and large scale CHP production.
Current annual consumption is appr. 1,5 mio tons with ambitious plans for significant expansion. DONG Energy is also expanding into advanced biomass conversion and refining like 2G ethanol production, low temperature gasification and waste refining.
Before joining DONG Energy Mr Bjerg served as Senior Analyst at the International Energy Agency in Paris and as Senior Project Manager at FORCE Technology.
Mr Bjerg has lead numerous national and international collaborative bioenergy projects and is chairman of the EURELECTRIC Task Force on Biomass.

Ludger Spohr is Director for International Sales & Business Development at VIS NOVA Trading in Bremen, Germany; a Joint Venture of the Diersch & Schroeder Group from Bremen, Germany, and of Mitsubishi Corp. from Tokyo, Japan. The company owns a 120.000t pellets plant in Germany.
Mr Spohr brings with him over fifteen years of experience in the forest products industry. He holds a degree in Business Administration from Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, where he specialized in Timber Trade and Wood Processing.
In previous years Mr Spohr worked as a pellet trader in Hamburg and was the Head of the Canadian Forest Product Industries in Brussels, Belgium.

He has worked as a consultant in several companies in the IT and management consultancy sector.
Currently he works at NEN, the Dutch Standardization Institute in the Energy resources division, where he focuses on sustainability standards.

Mrs. Alakangas has been working at VTT since 1983, and has versatile experience on bioenergy.
She has published over 200 publications. She has worked as the co-ordinator for EU Bioenergy network (EUBIONET) since 1999. She has also worked as a partner or task leader in about 30 EU projects.
She is leading the Working group 2 for CEN – Solid biofuel standardisation CEN TC335 and ISO 238.
Mrs. Alakangas has been involved in international co-operation since 1984 with different organisations like IEA, United Nations, EU, and Nordic Council of Ministers. In addition, she has contributed in co-ordination of Finnish energy technology programmes (e.g. Bioenergy, Wood Energy, Small Scale Wood Fuel Production and Use, BioRefine).

Matti Sihvonen has over 30 years experience in various tasks of wood products industry. After graduating from the faculty of Forestry at the Helsinki University with a degree in forest products marketing he started his career in late 1970´s in a sawmilling company where he worked in export sales and in production management and finally as a mill manager.
During the decade his responsibilities varied from sawmilling industry to value added wood products and he finally acted as the vice president of Finnish Forest Industries Federation in charge of the Wood Products Industry Unit. Simultaneously he acted as the president of Wood Focus Ltd., a lobbying, promotion and R&D tool of the industry and as the managing director of the Finnish Timber and Builders Merchants Association.
During his work in the federation he participated actively also into international co-operation of wood working industries and in various strategy projects. He was, for 7 years, a member of the management board of CEI-Bois the Brussels- based European Federation of Woodworking industries and he chaired for 5 years the board of Nordic Timber Council the Stockholm- based joint promotion organization of Nordic wood industries in Europe and Asia.
In 2002 Mr. Sihvonen was invited to senior vice president of strategy and business development in Finnforest Ltd. one of the biggest wood industry companies in Europe. After the merger of Finnforest into its parent company he started in 2008 his own consultant company MS Wood Industry Consulting Ltd. and is now working with strategy processes, market studies and in and other projects in bioenergy and wood industry.
Through his consultant company he is acting as a representative of FOEX Indexes Ltd. in bioenergy business area. For FOEX he has developed price indices for industrial wood pellets and for forest biomass. MS Wood Industry Consulting has also produced a multi client study on the outlook of industrial wood pellets in Europe 2010-2015-2020.
