Our webinar, “Will the Jatropha Sector Sustain Itself in Volatile Times” went live on January 20th to address the impact of financial crisis on Jatropha sector, as well as issues of sustainability and building a profitable Jatropha business model.
Dr. Mike Taverner, Founder and Executive Chairman of Jatoil Ltd, opened up to share his realistic projections and honest views on oil price uncertainties, maintaining investor interest through the global economic uncertainty, the need for sustainable practices in Jatropha cultivation, and his projections for 2009 and the upcoming years.
He said, “While the capital markets remain tight, only the very best businesses will survive. Management of cash flow is going to be critical,” providing a frank overview of the challenge ahead for Jatropha businesses.
Despite the current gloom and doom, he remained optimistic and offered his solution to facing the uncertainties ahead. He said, “This shake up is a good thing, and we’ll end up with a more robust industry at the end of it. The challenge for us will be to continue accessing development funds and strategic partnerships to develop sustainable supply chains.”
Dr. Taverner lent his methodological approach to some of the key issues that are creating uncertainties in the Jatropha sector including:
- Jatropha & Biofuels Industry projections for 2009.
- Oil price volatilities & its impact on Jatropha.
- How to maintain investor interest amidst global recession.
- Transforming your Jatropha project idea into a profitable business.
- Adopting sustainable agricultural practices for long-term success.
- Strategizing to make Jatropha projects carbon neutral.

Here in the Philippines Jatropha curcas exist more than 250 years ago and has been used as an household lights and herbal medicine and fences. Pouring in of foreign investment via Jatropha plantations will certainly change the denuded and unproductive lands of our region. The best impact that I can here is employment that Filipino doesn’t need to migrate somewhere to be employed. As I can see Jatropha needs manual labor in the next decade.
My strong contention is that the process of inviting investors into this type of land as define MARGINAL. Honestly speaking what the investors need is the ROI. Meaning the intention is to have excellent quality Fruits. Are we in the industry is expecting quality fruits coming from the marginal lands? So, big possibility of high input requirement needed.
At this point of view, more study and research and proper recommendations by the technocrats is just necessary.

My interest is in small production units to be used in the villages to produce oil to run small diesels for posho milling, rice polishing, edible oil processing, etc. I would really be interested in finding a source of information to learn the requirements to produce 100 to 200 liters per day Jatropha oil.

Your recent talk on Jatropha, marks another step to greatness in the production and utilization of bio- fuels. More grease to your elbow.
I will need your assistance in the area of cultivation, production and processing of Jatropha. Unfortunately, because of finances i will not be able to participate in the upcoming workshop in Malaysia.
Wish you all the best.
