Siemens, the German conglomerate is this week starting trials on behalf of an unnamed shipping company assessing the viability of jatropha-based biodiesel for powering turbines on a high-speed ferry.

The trials come amid tests which D1 revealed were being undertaken by two other unnamed European multinationals – one a consumer goods group using the biofuel to generate power, and another a specialty chemicals company assessing jatropha oil as a replacement for oil as a raw material.

…the demand also represented a “vote of confidence” in the whole jatropha sector, after a series of setbacks, according to an industry insider… The significance of these trials is largely in terms of the industry, opening up potential markets for the oil, which has yet to fulfil the hopes of investors who rushed to back jatropha towards the end of the last decade.

The 70 tonnes of fuel being used for the three trials was, in the context of the industry, a “relatively significant” amount.

“And the prospects for returns from the oil and a meal byproduct, being research as an animal feed, suggest that as an investment proposition, jatropha may have a better future than suggested by recent history”.

Read the entire article on: http://www.agrimoney.com/news/high-level-jatropha-trials-send-d1-shares-soaring–3023.html

In reference to above, there is no doubt that the industry is spurred to revive its momentum.

As a matter of fact, at JatrophaWorld Asia scheduled on 27-28 June 2011, in Hainan Island, China, Jatropha experts, cultivators and oil processors are anticipated to affirm this as they delve into the conference’s central theme of “Delivering Jatropha Oil to the Market – Strategies to Ramp Up Production”, share their knowhow including lessons learnt in large scale cultivation and also dispel common Jatropha myths.

A major highlight at this 1.5 day event is a private site tour to the Nursery and R&D Centre of China Petroleum Bio-Energy Co. Ltd (CPBE), arranged exclusively for registered delegates, and separately bookable on a first come first served basis.

The state department of science and technology is establishing a bio-diesel plant here for extraction of jatropha oil and its conversion into bio-diesel.

The plant, funded by the department of science and technology, Government of India, will be the first government-funded bio-diesel plant in Uttar Pradesh.

Established in the Biotech Networking Facility Center, run by the state’s department of science and technology near Bakshi Ka Talab area of Lucknow, the basic aim of the plant will be to train farmers by giving them first hand-experience in bio-diesel production. The facility can also be used by farmers who do large-scale jatropha farming to extract diesel from the oil.

“The plant is not a production unit, but rather a demonstration unit, which will enable farmers to know how to extract jatropha oil and then convert it into diesel for their usage,” said BL Meena, Principal Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Uttar Pradesh.

The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has granted Rs 24 lakh for the one-time establishment of the plant. The state government has agreed to bear the expenses of running the establishment, including manpower and other infrastructure, she said.

Jatropha’s rise in Asia as a promising source for bio-diesel has been given a boost in countries such as India. With increased emphasis on sustainability alongside recent innovations for optimizing jatropha yields quality & mechanical harvests, more governments are recognizing the potential of jatropha as a viable alternative feedstock option.

What are the latest developments in effective large-scale jatropha commercialization and cultivation methods? How will the global industry be shaped by new sustainability standards? Experts at the JatrophaWorld Asia 2011 will provide answers to these issues and more. Due to convene in Hainan Island, China, on 27-28 June 2011, the conference is the 7th in the industry-setting series.

The program is being finalized & will be uploaded online shortly.

TNT, WFP and local Malawian partner BERL (Bio energy Resources Ltd) are building a sustainable Jatropha business in Malawi that will give local smallholder farmers a new cash crop to grow and harvest that will create a reliable source of income.

The Jatropha project aims to alleviate poverty in third world countries by the most sustainable means possible. This fits seamlessly within TNT’s efforts to fight the root causes of hunger. And by the cultivation of Jatropha trees, TNT can compensate for its own CO2 emissions which will help TNT reach its goal to be carbon neutral in the year 2015. The Jatropha project is also completely aligned with WFP’s goal to support long term solutions to the hunger challenges.

The cultivation of Jatropha tackles several challenges in one go:

The alleviation of poverty and protection from food shortages. By growing and selling the Jatropha nuts, farmers’ income levels will improve in a more sustainable way, providing food security.

It fights the financial problems in Malawi with the creation of an additional income for farmers, and the replacement of fossil-fuel import with bio-energy production.

Growing Jatropha trees has positive effects on the environment as it produces ‘green’ fuels, compensates for CO2 emissions an prevents deforestation.

It combats the energy crisis in Malawi as Jatropha produces sources of energy (e.g. candles and firewood)

In January this year, Jim Lane, the editor of Biofuels Digest predicted that 2010 would be the year of Jatropha’s revival. Specifically, he said, “Jatropha will gain renewed interest and traction as a go-to feedstock for aviation biofuels.”

Jim hit the nail in the head with his comment! Within a few weeks of this prediction, General Motors announced a 5-year partnership with the US Department of Energy, and India’s Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) to demonstrate the commercial viability of Jatropha as biofuel feedstock. Jatropha was also blasted into Space as part of NASA’s “Alternative Energy Crops in Space” study, which aims to study if microgravity can help Jatropha Curcas plant cells grow faster.

With such high profile headlines, it is clear that Jatropha is back for 2010! And the time is ripe to tackle unanswered questions spanning the Propagation, Cultivation, Pruning, Harvesting, Oil Extraction, Processing and Marketing of Jatropha, to speed up the commercialization of Jatropha Cultivation.

JatrophaWorld 2010, meeting in Rotterdam from 6-7 October offers much-needed clarity!

The JatrophaWorld conference is back for 2010, to take up the mantle as the global meeting point for the Jatropha community to interact and exchange ideas on charting the right way forward to meet the Jatropha Commercialization challenge.

The controversial report by University of Twente (Gerbens-Leenes et al), which claimed that Jatropha has the highest water footprint among all the BioEnergy crops caused a stir in the jatropha sector, and now, rebuttals from the Jatropha research community are proving that the findings were wrong.

2nd JatrophaWorld Africa Speakers Prof. Bart Muys and Ir. Wouter Achten along with their colleague Wouter Maes from Belgium’s Katholieke Universiteit Leuven sent a clear message to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) rebutting the controversial findings.

Here were some of the key flaws they highlighted in the Gerbens-Leenes et al findings:

The data used by the authors (Gerbens-Leenes et al) were wrong. Instead of using data of real water used by jatropha, they summed the total rainfall and irrigation: the actual water used will be only a fraction of this sum, particularly in regions with very intense rainfall events; this has caused a considerable overestimation of the water footprint.

The other parameters necessary to calculate the water footprint of jatropha ( ffat, fdiesel, and HHVdiesel) were unfounded. The article they cited as reference did not match up to the figures they used.

The authors only used data of very young Jatropha plantations. Jatropha is a woody species, and at the beginning of its life, Jatropha, like other woody species, invests mainly in non-reproductive tissues, such as stem and root biomass. Mature jatropha plants invest considerably less in non-reproductive tissue and more in reproductive tissues, hence the water footprint decreases with age. Therefore, ignoring the particularities of a woody species additionally overestimated the water footprint. For a correct calculation of water footprint, the entire life span should be taken into account.

The authors used data of ONLY 5 jatropha plantations. They also failed to check whether the agronomical practices in these plantations were adequate.

A recent calculation of the water footprint in an Egyptian Jatropha plantation was only 16% of the Gerbens-Leenes estimate. Maes et al. gave a rough estimate, based on data on an Egyptian 1-year old plantation, and find that the water footprint under optimal irrigation was 65 m3/GJ, only 16% of the estimate of Gerbens-Leenes et al. However, it must be noted that the limited data currently available makes it is impossible for accurate caulculations of Jatropha’s WF.

Other world renowned Jatropha researchers have published similar rebuttals, rejecting the Gerbens-Leenes et al findings, including Raymond Jongschaap R.A.R. Blesgraaf, Thom Bogaard, E.N. van Loo and H.H.G. Savenije from University Wageningen and Delft.

>>Attend 2nd JatrophaWorld Africa<< to hear from Prof Bart Muys who will be speaking on the topic ‘First Worldwide Yield Model For Jatropha’ and Ir. Wouter Achten, who will be sharing on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Biodiesel Production!

As part of JatrophaWorld’s commitment in providing quality and useful knowledge, we have incorporated a Mini-Workshop on Jatropha Biodiesel Value Chain into the main program. Using a quantitative model to show you the economic indicators of jatropha projects, you will clearly see the profitability of your project as well as the risk profile.

We understand that the principal need and hurdle to jatropha project development currently is to secure financing, this mini-workshop is specially designed to help you meet funding requirements by showing financiers the shareholder values of a project.

The special feature of this session is that it will be “INTERACTIVE”. The participants would be given a short questionnaire prior to the Workshop to provide their own top seven variables, of their Jatropha farming, refining and marketing operations for the model. These variables would be then fed into the model and the outcome in the form of “Profitability”, “Cashflow” and “Risk Profile” shown to them. Thereafter, there will be Panel discussions, which would focus on the “Optimization of Jatropha Biodiesel Value Chain” and how each respondent could optimize his/her own Jatropha farming, biodiesel production and marketing operations. The Financier would be able to pay attention to the “critical variables” that would make a difference in the success of Jatropha Biodisel operations.

The value-added Mini-Workshop is offered to delegates of 2nd JatrophaWorld Americas at NO EXTRA COST!

You won’t want to miss the valuable insights offered by the mini-workshop.

Sign up for 2nd JatrophaWorld Americas now to secure your seat at the world’s premier Jatropha forum.

Please find below more details on the Mini-Workshop:

MINI-WORKSHOP: JATROPHA BIODIESEL VALUE CHAIN MODEL – MEETING FUNDING REQUIREMENTS
Day 2, 4 December 2009, 9.05 – 11.05 hrs.

Key Objectives:

To highlight the importance and methodology of integrating all the variables at a very granular level, as they relate to every aspect of your farming operations, oil extraction, trans-esterification and refining operations and eventually marketing, not only the “biodiesel” but also all the “byproducts”.

This would be achieved by developing and building a “quantitative model” whose objectives would be to show the “financial results” of the operations by highlighting the economic indicators of the project such as Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, Payback Period and Present Worth Index. This in turn would go a long way in assisting you to procure finance successfully to fund their operations which seems to be the principal need and hurdle of all Jatropha growers.

For the Financier, the Decision & Risk Analysis (D&RA) will clearly establish, what the “Principal Drivers of the Business” are and what the Risk Profile is for the Project, i.e., the probability of enhancing or destroying shareholder value.

For Jatropha Farmer and Refiner too, this would show which variables they have to improve upon to reduce the “Risk Profile” of the project and enhance shareholder value.

Jatropha has been hailed as the feedstock for sustainable biodiesel production, over food crops like soy or rape. If managed right, Jatropha projects offer the chance to realize ‘triple-bottom line’ investments with social, environmental and economic returns.

The upcoming 2nd JatrophaWorld Africa conference zooms into optimizing the efficiencies and economics of Jatropha, and spotlight the rapidly growing Jatropha industry in Africa.

According to an article in Biofuels Innovator Jatropha has been cultivated in Africa several hundred years ago for the production of soap and as oil for lamps. The same article reports that in the 1980s to 1990s, development organizations recognized that Jatropha cultivation could provide a means for local communities to develop themselves, and the first commercial-scale projects were established about five years ago.

Today, significant investments in cultivating Jatropha as an energy crop are taking place throughout in Africa according to GEXSI’s Global Jatropha Market Study, but growth in Jatropha projects is not uniform across the continent.

In Northern Africa, the extreme arid climatic conditions have resulted in very few Jatropha projects situated in the region. However, several pilot projects irrigated with sewage water are being tested in Egypt.

In Western Africa, Jatropha has been traditionally cultivated in Mali & Cape Verde, where villages have depended on Jatropha oil for village energy supply. Large-scale Jatropha projects are being developed in Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon.

In East Africa, Tanzania and Ethiopia have the largest Jatropha cultivation projects. There is also emerging interest in growing Jatropha in Kenya and Uganda, with many small scale projects already established.

Southern Africa (including Madagascar) is where Africa’s biggest commercial Jatropha cultivation projects are currently under development. The largest acreage under cultivation currently exists in Madagascar, Zambia and Mozambique.

2nd JatrophaWorld Africa, part of the world’s largest Jatropha conference series, meets in Brussels on 14-15 October 2009 to discuss important issues and tackle challenges that the industry is currently facing, including land competition, food versus fuel, water usage and many more.

The conference also aims to convey the important message of Sustainable Jatropha Cultivation, and increase global interest in investing in Africa’s Jatropha sector.

At 2nd JatrophaWorld Americas on 3-4 December 2009 in Miami- FL, we drive home the message that Jatropha isn’t a Zero-Maintenance Miracle Crop or a One-Shot ‘Solution’, and provide a realistic view of the opportunities and challenges ahead for Jatro-Entrepreneurs.

So is jatropha a wonder crop that can provide a quick fix for the biodiesel industry and easy income for farmers? What are the key success factors of making Jatropha works?

2nd JatrophaWorld Americas analyzes the outlook of jatropha production and gives you the lowdown on the current scenario.

Most Jatropha cultivation in the region is concentrated in Central and South America, where the tropical climate and socio-economic conditions make it ideal for Jatropha cultivation. Many Jatropha projects in these regions are also tied to socio-economic development projects and pro-poor investment.

In the USA, Hawaii, California and Florida may be able to support jatropha farming, and there are reports that jatropha cultivation in Florida will increase significantly within the next five years.

In fact, the many jatro-prenuers who have already started growing jatropha in North and South America were among the 500 people who attended last year’s Jatropha World Americas in Miami.

The Jatropha industry however acknowledges that more research is needed to develop the crop for planting on a commercial scale.

Some of the key challenges faced include increasing the volume and consistency of oil yields, developing plants with more standard fruit maturation rates, mechanical harvesting techniques and the development of co-products to enhance the economic viability of the crop. For insights on how to utilize Jatropha biomass, >>CLICK HERE<<

Estimates of just how long it will take to develop these plant characteristics and co-products vary, but at 2nd Jatropha World Americas, you can get an update on the latest research into these key challenges from the world’s top Jatropha experts.

In fact, attending 2nd Jatropha World Americas will be an excellent opportunity for you to learn a lot much more about the characteristics of the Jatropha plant and what it needs. Our panel of experts will cut through the over-enthusiasm and hype over the Jatropha plant to present a more realistic picture of what Jatropha is truly capable of as a BioEnergy source!

Plans for the 2nd Jatropha World Americas are kicking into high gear! The conference gathers leading Jatro-Entrepreneurs from around the world, as well as biodiesel producers, investors, government officials and researchers in the region’s biggest Jatropha conference.

If you are keen on joining us as participants, media partners, exhibitors and / or sponsors you can submit your registrations, enquiries and proposals >>HERE<< or contact Ms. Lee Lin at +65 6346 9146 or email her at leelin@cmtsp.com.sg.
