Founded by Paul Dalton, Dream Fuels, Limitada, of San Jose, Costa Rica and My Dream Fuel, LLC, (MDF) in the United States are two companies which act as the exclusive worldwide distributors of the tissue culture cloning technology of Labland Biotech of Mysore, India www.lablandbiodiesel.com. Dr. Sudheer Shetty of Ladland has put together a team of Ph.D.’s to revolutionize the approach taken with biodiesel in general and the development of Jatropha in particular. Unlike soybeans, corn and many other agricultural crops, Jatropha can be cultivated on arid and semi arid non-agricultural land. Thus, growing Jatropha is never a question of having to choose between land for food or land for fuel. In fact, in most countries, with the use of our proprietary soil conditioner, no irrigation is needed nor the application of fertilizers after the first seed harvest.

Also, on a per acre basis, Clonal Jatropha can yield up to 10 times the amount of oil as other sources of biodiesel. Finally, Jatropha is a perennial, lasting up to 50 years without replanting. In fact the ‘cake’ (portion of the seed left over after extraction of the seed’s oil) is full of nitrogen fixing compounds making it an excellent organic fertilizer. Finally, on average one acre of a Jatropha Plantation can capture four (4) tons of CO2 per year.

MDF offers two major programs, one directed to the biodiesel production market, the other directed at business in general. For the biodiesel production market MDF offers the opportunity for refineries to purchase Jatropha Oil at a flat rate of $2.50 per gallon for 5 years and for an additional 5 years at $2.00 below market rate as defined by a mutually agreed upon index. The general business program which goes by the name of “10 For 10 Fuel Discount Program”, involves the payment of a set amount of money per gallon or liter currently being used by a business for as little as 10 months and receiving a specific discount on a per gallon or per liter basis for each unit of fuel consumed over as long as the next 10 years. Both programs involve either the purchase of a leasehold interest in our Jatropha Plantations and/or a Joint Venture Agreement. In either case, programs can and are being implemented on both land owned by MDF or the business or Joint Venture Partner.

Paul S. Dalton, was for 29 years the senior partner of Dalton & Dalton, P.C. As an attorney and a certified financial planner, Mr. Dalton spent nearly 3 decades advising potential business startups on both legal and financial issues. Prior to establishing Dream Fuels, Mr. Dalton reforested tens of thousands of tropical hardwoods in Costa Rica and acquired the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to the unique cloning technology developed by Labland Biotech of Mysore, India.

The TerraCottem soil conditioner is the original proprietary mixture of more than twenty hydroabsorbent and nutritive components that work in synergy, more effectively than any single polymer or fertilizer product, to significantly increase the capability of soils and growing media to retain and provide water and nutrients, to improve plant and root growth, and to reduce the amount of water necessary to create high-quality plants and turf.

The product is used today by professionals and consumers in more than forty-five countries worldwide to improve the quality and success of their work while reducing water consumption, in landscaping, sport and golf turf, horticulture, reforestation and gardening. The TerraCottem company manufactures the TerraCottem soil conditioner and distributes the product through a network of distributors in Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. To ensure that the product remains at the forefront of the industry, research and development on improving the TerraCottem mixture continues. This research and development is carried out in conjunction with independent national research facilities in Belgium.

How does it work?

By absorbing water and nutrients that would normally be lost to runoff or evaporation and providing plants and turf with a consistent, readily available source, TerraCottem improves the water retention capacity of soils and growing media, improving soil structure and aeration, increasing root growth, enhancing fertilizer availability and reducing the occurance of transplantation shock, water stress and resultant plant loss. The product is specially suited for use in degraded or problematic soils and root zones with little capillarity, eg. sandy soils, containers, pots, industrial or municipal areas where little or no maintenance (irrigation, fertilization, soil treatment) is performed, and to improve the quality and performance of growing media.

The product

A mixture of:
- The best-performing potassium-based organic hydroabsorbent polymers currently available, to increase the capacity of soils or substrates to retain and provide water and nutrients.
- A starter component of soluble and slow-release mineral and organic fertilizers, which play an important role during the initial growth phase, and for many months after.
- Trace amounts of a growth stimulating agent to encourage extensive root development in the initial growth phase
- A carrier material allows homogeneous distribution of all components.

Speaker Profile
Davy Ottevaere is the R&D Manager at TerraCottem NV, located in Zulte, Belgium. The company has a second office, TerraCottem Internacional SL, in Benalup (Cadiz), Spain. He graduated in 2000 as bio-engineer in soil and water management from the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at at the University of Ghent, Belgium. He is currently preparing for a PhD degree at the same university with a study on “Soil Physical and Soil Mechanical Characteristics of Sand Blends and Sand Fractions”. MSc. Davy Ottevaere joined TerraCottem NV in 2000. His task is threefold: R&D on the soil conditioner TerraCottem to ensure that the product remains at the forefront of the industry. This research and development is carried out in conjunction with independent national research facilities in Belgium. A second aspect is project management of worldwide showcases of the usage of TerraCottem in various applications and for 2008 priority will be given to potential investors in Jatropha curcas plantations on degraded land so that competition with the human food sector can be avoided. Finally, technical support is given to the commercial department in both offices and to their agents in more than 40 countries. Davy is also board member of Terr@dialoog, a non-profit development cooperation organisation, with focus on soil improvement for school gardens, women’s vegetable gardens and reforestation projects.

Viridas PLC, a company listed on the AIM market of The London Stock Exchange.
Its company chairman, Mr Stanley Wootliff started researching the developement of the Biodiesel market in general, and Jatropha Curcas in particular in 2006.

Two things quickly became apparent, the exciting possibilities for Jatropha commercially and environmentally, together with a major absence of scientifically based Jatropha knowledge and research.

In order to address this lack of reliable information, in 2007 Viridas raised US$1.2M to establish a trial Jatropha plantation in the North East of Brazil. This plantation to provide Viridas with a sound knowledge base to support the initiation, in the Autumn 2008, of a major seven year project, to purchase 250,000 Hectares of idle land in North East Brazil on which to plant and develop Jatropha under the companys its own agronomy. This will be a world scale Jatropha business.

To further promote this project Viridas PLC entered into an exclusive strategic partnership with INEOS Enterprises Ltd, part of INEOS, the worlds third largest chemical group, with annual sales in excess US$45 Billion. INEOS Enterprises will bring to the partnership down stream intelligence together with a significant outlet for Jatropha oil through its ambitious strategy to become a leading European biodiesel supplier. The first step of that strategy, to achieve at least 2 million tonnes of biodiesel output by 2012.

Stanley Wootliff has had an active life in the city and has been involved as a major investor and Chief Executive in a number of smaller listed companies. He became Chairman and Chief Executive of Viridas Plc in July 1986. He was amongst the first to realise the potential for Jatropha and Biodiesel and in December 2006 started the research and the reorganisation of the company necessary to refocus the companies activities away from its traditional textile trading and into Biodiesel.

SoilCorp will spend approximately US$ 450 million of equity over five years to reach a production capacity of 30 000 barrels of plant oil per day. The oil will be made from Jatropha Curcas in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America. Production will carry little or no carbon debt and is estimated to reduce GHG gas emissions by more than 70% compared to carbon fossil fuels. Our renewable oil field developments will take place in a sustainable manner, helping regions emancipate themselves from the poverty gridlock of subsistence farming and providing infrastructure for economic growth. SoilCorp will donate US$ 1 per barrel of oil produced in support of local health-, education-, gender mainstreaming-, capacity building- and outreach programs.

SoilCorp considers Plant oil, and its refined by-product biodiesel, viable only if made from non-edible perennial plants grown in areas where production does not negatively affect rain forestation, and where it is non-competitive with food crop cultivation. Further, we perceive standardized sustainability certification procedures essential for the industry to succeed.

Currently, R&D competency is fragmented. Synergizing R&D from a variety of sources, partners, and test facilities is in our opinion vital to establish agricultural best-practices, develop ideotype cultivars, enhance growth and yield characteristics, enable mechanized harvesting and spreading risk. As Jatropha farming is labor intensive and mainly conducted in rural areas, SoilCorp believes community- and infrastructure building is as vital for success as agronomical procedures and advancements.

We consider risk reduction, accumulated learning, and knowledge dissemination key success factors. Fiduciary responsibility dictates properly diversifying geographic, agricultural, political, and plantation risk. Green-field perils can be minimized through investing in and ramping up ongoing operations. Logistical challenges may be harnessed by curtailing initial farm size. Enabling frameworks for joint R&D, proliferation of best plant and plantation practices, and streamlining community and infrastructure building are all paramount ingredients in increasing each farm’s chance of success.

We plan to fulfill this mission primarily by cultivating jatropha curcas, a crop with the potential to yield fuel without squeezing out food production or reducing biodiversity, and with the potential to help rural economies in some of the poorest parts of the world.

Biogreen Oil cultivates jatropha primarily through plantations which we directly operate.
Biogreen Oil actively intercrops alternative plantings for local food production and additional biofuel feedstock.
Biogreen Oil plans to use state-of-the-art biomass conversion processes. It will leverage the technology used by other feedstocks for its Jatropha Biofuel processing.
Biogreen Oil employs partners with the best technology for seed oil extraction, ensuring optimum results from all plantation operation.
Biogreen Oil’s extraction and production facilities provide local farmers with opportunities to use marginal lands on which to plant jatropha. Biogreen Oil will manages all downstream operations ensuring the farmer can concentrate on what they do best, growing plants.

In addition to Jatropha, Biogreen Oil is developing other high yielding, non food competing biofuel energy feedstocks. www.biogreenoil.com

The production ecological approach explains the behaviour of ecological systems at higher integration levels by studying system processes at lower levels. His research group at Plant Research International focuses on Agrosystems research at different scales, from the sustainable production on plot level to (integrated) farming systems, from regional studies to global explorations, all based on the optimization of natural resources, such as water and nutrients. He is currently involved in the global debate on the production of Food, Feed and Fuel and the potentials of bio-energy with regards to limitations set by the availability of land and (natural) resources.

JatrophaWorld 2008 Miami Pre-Conference Workshop Leader
Monday, June 9
A to Z of JATROPHA CURCAS L. (Separately Bookable)

Overview of Presentation
In our search for renewable energy sources, Jatropha curcas has been promoted as a bio-energy crop with huge potentials. The claims on Jatropha curcas are based on a number of positive traits and characteristics, each of them observed separately from the other and under different circumstances. Real numbers and scientifically sound publications are hardly found, and you may wonder why. In this workshop we will introduce you to a better understanding of the plant and we will address the claims and facts on Jatropha curcas through a plant physiological and production ecological approach. The workshop will help you to get realistic expectations of the crop as a renewable energy source.

D1 Oils Plant Science, a full daughter of D1 Oils plc, is a biofuels technology company. Our strategy is to develop new energy crops into sustainable commercial fuels. We provide technology and services for the breeding, development, planting and harvesting of new varieties of commercial biofuel crops, focusing on alternative, sustainable feedstocks that are not subject to the same price pressures as food-grade crops. We have an established plant science and planting programme for Jatropha curcas, a robust, tropical oilseed bearing tree. Jatropha produces inedible oil feedstock for biodiesel and is able to make use of land not suitable for arable agriculture. Our knowledge and new varieties on Jatropha are produced for D1-BP Fuel crops, the joint venture between British Petroleum and D1 Oils that focuses on planting Jatropha curcas and producing the oil from the harvested seeds.

Biodiesel Industries, Inc., is a company founded by Mr Russell Teall over ten years ago for the purpose of developing and commercializing biodiesel production technology. Under Mr. Teall’s leadership Biodiesel Industries has successfully evolved patented biodiesel production techniques for a wide variety of feedstocks.

Beginning with laboratory scale demonstrations, it eventually lead to full scale commercial operations in California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and Australia. Biodiesel Industries recently broke ground on its newest facility located in Detroit, in conjunction with DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler, Chrysler), Bosch, Delphi and NextEnergy. These plants utilize Teall’s patented process and have capacities of 3-20 million gallons per year. They produce biodiesel predominantly from recycled fryer oils, but are capable of using a wide variety of other feedstocks, including crude vegetable oils and animal fats.

Biodiesel Industries is continuing to actively develop improvements to the biodiesel production process in conjunction with the US Navy at the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center at Naval Base Ventura County in California where a production unit is being used for research and development involving innovative feedstocks and other biobased products. Additional commercial production facilities are under development with capacities in excess of 20 million gallons each.
