TERI was formally established in 1974 with the purpose of tackling and dealing with the immense and acute problems that mankind is likely to be faced with in the years ahead

on account of the gradual depletion of the earth’s finite energy resources which are largely non-renewable and

on account of the existing methods of their use which are polluting

The Institute has grown substantially over the years, particularly, since it launched its own research activities and established a base in New Delhi, its registered headquarters.

TERI has US$9.4 million funding from BP (British Petroleum) to demonstrate the feasibility of producing biodiesel from jatropha curcas.

The project, which is expected to take 10 years will cultivate around 8,000 hectares currently designated as wasteland with jatropha and install all the equipment necessary for seed crushing, oil extraction and processing to produce 9 million liters of bio-diesel a year. A full environmental and social impact assessment on the supply chain and a life cycle analysis of greenhouse gas emissions will be completed as part of the project. TERI will be responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of the project.

Speaker Profile
Dr Alok Adholeya is currently the Director of Biotechnology and Bioresources Division at TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), New Delhi, an independent, not-for-profit research organization, which he joined in 1986. Many awards and honours have come his way including the Gwalior Ratna in 2000, the Paryavaran Sanrakshan Samman (an award for protecting the environment) in 1999, Young Scientist Award in 1999, and the Biotech Product and Process Development and Commercialization Award 2004 by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

He has found ways to harness the power mycorrhizae to increase the productivity of crop plants, and to restore degraded lands. The increased demand for mycorrhizal biofertilizer prompted him to commercialize it. He has developed many other technologies involving mycorrhiza in the reclamation of industrial wastelands. He has also identified suitable microbes beneficial for growing biofuel crops.

He has published over 60 research papers in reputed national and international journals and has also been a member of the editorial boards of many of them. He has often chaired many advisory committees on agriculture and bioremediation, and has guided 11 doctoral students and many masters’ students so far. He also acts as an invited reviewer for several reputed journals. He is also an invited speaker in many international forums.

South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd. is a leading developer of high quality carbon credits, founded and managed by highly experienced carbon market professionals. It was the first company worldwide that generated and brought to market issued CERs with the Gold Standard quality label. South Pole staff has advised successfully registered CDM and VER projects with a forecasted total of more than 100 million tCO2e till 2012.

Our services:
• Carbon Asset Development. We develop emission reduction projects together with technology partners;
• Sourcing. We identify and contract high-quality emission reductions for large buyers;
• Advisory Services. We provide distinctive advisory services on carbon markets.

Speaker Profile
Patrick Horka is a project manager at South Pole. Patrick holds a Master in Environmental Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. In his Master Thesis “A Biofuel Baseline and Monitoring Methodology under the Clean Development Mechanism: The State of the Art, a new Proposal with a LCA Approach and a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Estimation” he addressed the main sustainability problems but also possibilities of Biofuel projects to generate Carbon Credits.

Currently he is involved in a 500,000 hectares Jatropha plantation project on degraded land in the Philippines bringing 25 million carbon credits to the market. Another 500,000 hectares in the Philippines are planned in the coming years.

Overview of presentation
The presentation will clearly point out the current possibilities of Biofuel producers to obtain carbon credits. So far it has hardly been possible to claim credits for replacing fossil fuels through Biofuels. Still, other options such as gaining credits by implementing afforestation/reforestation, biomass or biogas projects are feasible options. The best combination of carbon projects to maximize the output on carbon credits depend on several parameters that need to be evaluated carefully.

The Forest College and Research Institute is one of the constituent colleges of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) located at Mettupalayam in the sylvan surroundings of foot hills of the Nilgiris. The institute has been mandated with biofuel research programme over a decade and contributed significantly for the promotion and popularization of Jatropha and other Tree Borne Oil seeds (TBO’s) as a source of biofuel.

The first Jatropha based evaluation trial was established as early in the year 1992 .During the journey of Jatropha improvement programme, the institute has assembled 9 species of jatropha,35 seed sources,106 progenies and more than 35 clones. The narrow variability in the existing Jatropha genetic resources directed the institute to create/induce variability through wide crosses which resulted in excellent and successful hybrid development programme.

The institute has excellent infrastructure facilities both at land and lab level and involved in classical to molecular breeding and developed excellent hybrid derivatives. This institute is supported by various government as well as non-government agencies and corporate sectors and developed varieties on need basis. The institute is mandated with Jatropha based biofuel programme and developed hybrid derivatives and hybrid clones which are under various stages of evaluation. All the research contribution of the institute has been successfully transferred to various stake holders through contract farming. Above all, this institute is known for its excellence in teaching, research and extension activities.

Speaker Profile
Dr. K.T. Parthiban is an Associate Professor at Forest College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Mettupalayam, India. He holds a Doctorate in Forestry, specialized in tree breeding and actively involved in research activities for the improvement of Jatropha and other Tree Borne Oil Seeds (TBO’s) as a source of biofuel.

He has been involved in biofuel programme for more than a decade and intensively involved in promotion and popularization of Jatropha based biofuel plantations through contract farming in association with biofuel industries in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Dr Parthiban has been pioneering in Jatropha hybrid development during the last 7 years through inter and intra specific hybridization using the potential genetic resources identified by him and significantly developed variable Jatropha hybrids with a potential for higher yield and oil. All the Jatropha genetic resources and hybrid derivatives were characterized for the oil content and quality and also through molecular markers.
