Prabhakar Nair has spent his entire professional career spanning 30 years with UOP LLC, a leading Refining and Petrochemical Technology development and licensing company, headquartered in Des Plaines, Illinois. Nair is a chemical engineer by training and has served in a variety of roles for UOP including process development, engineering, sales and marketing and technical services. He spent a considerable portion of his career in UOP’s Asian operations in Indonesia, Singapore and India. Since mid-2007, Mr Nair has been associated with UOP’s newly established Renewables & Chemicals Business Unit and is responsible for marketing and planning functions. Nair holds a BChE from City Univ of NY, an MChE from Illinois Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University.

Overview of Presentation
Government policy is driving substitution of petroleum feedstocks with biologically derived feedstocks. However, as biofuels become increasingly pervasive, the debate over the potential of biofuels to become a sustainable source of liquid transportation fuels continues. Much of this debate is accentuated by life cycle analyses of biofuel production routes, including low yields of biofuels from crops that would otherwise be used for food production, the poor energy balance for producing biofuels and a lack of production and distribution networks. Consequently, there are intensive efforts underway to develop technologies that can process 2nd generation feedstocks such as agro & forest wastes and inedible& algal oils into transportation fuels. The long term sustainability of the biofuels industry will be largely driven by the availability of these 2nd generation feedstocks and the technologies to process them. This presentation will focus on UOP’s efforts to convert 2nd generation feedstocks such as jatropha, camelina and algal oils to a renewable jet fuel. The following key points will be addressed:

Energy Macro-market Summary

UOP Renewables vision

Market Drivers for Renewable Jet

UOP’s Renewable Jet Development Program

Renewable Jet Economics

Life cycle analysis of renewable jet

Oxbo International manufactures harvesting equipment for specialty agricultural products. Many of these harvesters remove fruit from crops that are grown in tall rows, similar to jatropha. Crops similar to jatropha for which we have harvesters include grapes, raspberries, blueberries, rose hip, coffee and currants. Oxbo also produces a line of equipment designed to shape and prune woody crops, like jatropha. These pruners can be mounted to Oxbo mobile equipment or attached to a tractor. Oxbo has three manufacturing facilities in the United States. Oxbo distributes it product through over 50 dealers locations and seven company owned distribution centers. Innovation, Integrity and Customer Service make up the core values of the company.

Scott Korthuis, BSME, BSChE, University of Washington. Professional Engineer. Currently a Product Manager for Oxbo International Corporation. He has worked extensively over the past 20 years developing harvesting equipment for niche crops similar to jatropha. Has designed and tested harvesters for a variety of specialty agricultural crop.

Overview of Presentation
Oxbo has a harvester designed for harvesting jatropha. The harvester uses technology developed in other small fruit crops similar to jatropha. Oxbo has been testing a variety of methods of removing ripe jatropha from the tree. Testing has shown that ripe fruit can be harvested while leaving green fruit on the plant. Once harvested the fruit is conveyed, cleaned, and then either stored in the machine or further conveyed into a trailer in the next row. This trailer travels with the harvester and is capable of removing the crop quickly from the field. When planning for machine harvest the grower must consider row spacings, headland area, and plant density. All of these will affect the harvester’s ability to selectively remove, and collect ripe fruit.

Jatropha Biotech Solutions LLC is a new consulting business created by managing partners Bob Burkey and Bob Harris. Mr. Burkey has been the Director of the Hawaii Biotech Tissue Culture Center for the past four-and-a-half years and Mr. Harris, a Johns Hopkins-trained biophysicist with an M.A. from the University of Oregon in Botany, has been manager of protocol development at the lab for the past six months.

With bio-technical experience in tissue culture of Jatropha curcas, the team offers analysis and hands-on guidance to biofuel concerns seeking vigorous growth and optimal yields by Jatropha curcas in plantation settings. We provide expertise in setting up site-specific tissue-culture laboratories and in selecting and/or developing superior plant strains designed to thrive in local conditions.

Drawing on its extensive experience in tissue culture and tropical agriculture, the group’s objective is to formulate and execute commercial production plans which will maximize profits for large-scale jatropha projects.

Hawaii Biotech Tissue Culture Center (HBTCC)
Funded by federal and state grants, the Hawaii Biotech Tissue Culture Center was created in 2004 with a mandate to provide tissue-culture services and new crops for the Hawaii agricultural community. It is a project of the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, a non-profit workforce development enterprise.

In its 8500 square foot facility, HBTCC’s technical teams have mass produced commercial clones of orchids, Camellia sinense (green tea), viryea (tropical rhododendrums) and vanilla. In the past two years, HBTCC has shifted its focus to Jatropha curcas, identifying superior high-yield cultivars and conducting ground-breaking research into protocols for mass production through tissue culture.

Speaker Profile
Robert Burkey has owned and operated commercial orchid nurseries in California and Hawaii for the past 25 years. An accomplished orchid hybridizer, he has received numerous awards for his distinctive cultivars.

For 12 years he operated a tissue culture laboratory at his Hawaii nursery. He assumed the post of Director of the Hawaii Biotech Tissue Culture Center four-and-a-half years ago. There he has established a 25-acre experimental jatropha research farm in Hilo and managed development of a tissue culture protocol for mass production of superior jatropha cultivars at the HBTCC lab.

Bob is also a managing partner in Jatropha Biotech Solutions LLC, a consulting firm with expertise in mass-meristem production systems for superior jatropha for the biofuels industry.

Bob has B.A. and M.A. degrees in Philosophy from Kansas State University and the University of Toledo.

Overview of Presentation
An issue with jatropha as a compelling biofuel source has been yield per acre. Selected superior plants can produce up to double the yield of average plants, but a reliable method for mass multiplying tissue cultured superior cultivars has proved elusive. Mr. Burkey will present findings relevant to this goal based upon research conducted at the Hawaii Biotech Tissue Culture Center in Hilo, Hawaii. The HBTCC’s Jatropha Program has focused on two objectives: (1) the selection and development of superior cultivars, and (2) development of tissue culture protocols to mass-multiply these cultures in vitro. The presentation will track the history of the HBTCC’s efforts, providing useful information about facilities and timelines needed to accomplish clonal mass production, and will share results achieved to date by the HBTCC program.

Speaker Profile
Charles Anderson was born and raised in Homer, Alaska. At an early age he was exposed to many challenges where self reliance and innovation were his only option to solve problems. These childhood experiences have shaped his approach to alternative fuel systems development and have subsequently lead to the formation of Golden Fuel Systems and their related products.

In 1999, Charles started to study plant oil based fuels for use on his farm and diesel equipment. By 2000, he successfully ran his personal diesel truck on waste vegetable oil. The following year he started one of the first Straight Vegetable oil conversion Companies in the United States.

After forming Golden Fuel Systems, Charles called on language skills developed during his time as a student, and later, a missionary in Japan to assist the Japanese national government to develop a plan for the use of straight vegetable oil in diesel engines. These efforts have produced not only favorable tax incentives for the use of recycled plant oils in diesel engines in Japan but laid a road map for other countries to follow.

Since then, his company Golden Fuel Systems has equipped thousands of diesels to run on Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO, not Biodiesel). In the past 3 years time they have served thousands of customers. Golden Fuel Systems holds the distinction of having converted more varied types of diesel engines than any other company world wide.

Recognizing these accomplishments, Charles was invited to represent Japan and the United States, in the first International Plant Oil Congress in Erfurt, Germany. He was also invited to present on vegetable oil Bio-fuel conversions at Google headquarters in California.

Charles currently resides in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri with his wife and 4 children. They live on a 100 acre Farm off the grid running on solar power and vegetable oil fueled diesels.

Overview of Presentation
We will discuss the theory and application of using plant oil in modern diesel engines.

We will also cover common problems and misconceptions associated with using Plant oil based fuels.

Biodiesel Industries, Inc., is a company founded by Mr Russell Teall over ten years ago for the purpose of developing and commercializing biodiesel production technology. Under Mr. Teall’s leadership Biodiesel Industries has successfully evolved patented biodiesel production techniques for a wide variety of feedstocks. Beginning with laboratory scale demonstrations, it eventually lead to full scale commercial operations in California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and Australia. Biodiesel Industries recently broke ground on its newest facility located in Detroit, in conjunction with DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler, Chrysler), Bosch, Delphi and NextEnergy. These plants utilize Teall’s patented process and have capacities of 3-20 million gallons per year. They produce biodiesel predominantly from recycled fryer oils, but are capable of using a wide variety of other feedstocks, including crude vegetable oils and animal fats.

Biodiesel Industries is continuing to actively develop improvements to the biodiesel production process in conjunction with the US Navy at the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center at Naval Base Ventura County in California where a production unit is being used for research and development involving innovative feedstocks and other biobased products. Additional commercial production facilities are under development with capacities in excess of 20 million gallons each.

Biodiesel Industries has conducted research on jatropha in India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Mexico and the US. Beginning with a 2003 study in India commissioned by the USAID and USTDA, the initial work focused on the selection of the proper cultivars, hybridization and agronomics. Superior seed types were introduced into the US and Mexico beginning in 2005, and field trials were conducted. The results of the trials will be reviewed at the conference with an emphasis on seed selection, climate, cultivation practices, toxicity and cold tolerance.
