Jatrophabook and its community will cooperate with some of the most important international institutions to establish guidelines to improve Jatropha sustainability. Local institutions will also support the delineation of ad hoc principles for every Jatropha growing country and will provide assistance to the registered members.

“Setting Up Successful Jatropha Projects”, our webcast, went live at 9am EST (USA), 3pm CET (Central Europe), 6.30pm IST (India), 9pm SST (Singapore) on 30 September, and attracted over 150 live listeners and contributors.

Presented in line with JATROPHAWORLD HAMBURG 2008, the webcast called on investors and the Jatropha community to use their economic muscle to put Jatropha in the ground and secure the future of the feedstock.

Speaking at the webcast were Dr. R. Rajagopal, author of the position paper “Best Practices for Long Term Jatropha Development” and Mr. Jamey Hadden, Director of Strategic Development at GreenEnergy Ltd, who has to date, been closely involved in over $20 million of successful placements (both private and public) for jatropha-specific ventures.

Dr. Raj and Mr. Hadden had a lively exchange on the sustainability criteria, Jatropha project management strategies, and the risks and barriers to Jatropha investments. They agreed during the course of their discussion that there isn’t enough Jatropha being cultivated to meet global demand for fuel; both felt that more needs to be done for the future success of Jatropha.

Mr. Hadden raised a valid point when he asked listeners “What are you willing to do to help us make this market?” while discussing the lack of secure supplies of Jatropha seeds and oil.

But it didn’t stop there. He challenged Biodiesel refiners seeking secure supplies of Jatropha oil to, “Go out there and buy some Jatropha right now, lock in a price, lock in your investment and lock in a supply that you will start experiencing in about 3-4 years, that quite frankly, you OWN.”

Dr. Raj however reminded listeners about the importance of cultivating Jatropha in a sustainable way, with an understanding of local conditions being the main contributing factor in developing the right sets of practices. He further clarified that there was no ONE method to grow Jatropha successfully, and any profit model or sustainability model needs to be developed at a local level.

Dr. Raj and Mr. Hadden then moved on to answer questions that had been pre-submitted by listeners from Asia, Europe, North & South America and Africa. There was even a live question and answer session, where participants called in & wrote in to contribute to a lively discussion on Jatropha!

To sum up, the webcast was exciting, fast paced, and many issues were raised and dissected by our experts Dr. Raj and Mr. Hadden. In a nutshell, these issues were:

Developing Sustainability Criteria at a local level

Securing Supply of Jatropha oil and seeds

Jatropha’s frost tolerance

A feasible Economic Model for Jatropha cultivation

Jatropha’s Socio-Economic Impact

Need for Jatropha community to meet and exchange ideas

If you missed the live webcast, not to worry. We anticipated that many of you would not have been able to tune in live due to time differences and busy schedules.

We currently have put up the recording of this exciting webcast, which looked at all of the above issues in brief, for you!

Zürich. Three organizations have founded a global “Jatropha Sustainable Biofuels Alliance”. Their mission is to actively promote a positive reputation for sustainable biofuels and to support their production. Despite a negative public perception not all biofuels have a negative impact on hunger, poverty and the environment.

Jatropha, for example, is a small tree, which grows in Latin America, Africa and Asia. It has long been used for reforestation of semi-arid areas. It also has an enormous potential to increase food production and reduce poverty, as recently shown by a report commissioned by WWF. It allows the cultivation of food plants in combination with biofuel production and rehabilitates land that would not be used for food production otherwise.

Biofuel made from Jatropha may contribute significantly to fight climate change and poverty. It generates jobs and a regular income for local communities.

Jatropha Sustainable Biofuels Alliance was founded by: 4C business campaigning GmbH (Zurich), The Global Exchange for Social Investment / GEXSI (London) and Green Power Holding AG (Zurich).

One of their first goals is to raise awareness to the fact that there are different kinds of biofuels and
each of them needs to be viewed individually.

Miami, FL (BUSINESSWIRE) September 24, 2008 – Is Jatropha a sustainable biofuel energy solution? Will growing Jatropha actually improve the lives of the poor across Asia and Africa?

A world -renowned Jatropha expert claims the answer is “yes.” Dr. Hari M Behl, a Senior Fulbright fellow, has more than 100 publications, 10 books and 10 filed patents to his credit. Dr Behl will share his key findings at the Jatropha Plantation Best Practices Workshops, on November 6-7 (Miami) and November 11-12 (Mexico City).

These two-day, intensive training programs provide Jatropha practitioners with a valuable understanding of Jatropha oil crop’s habits, requirements, its interactions with the environment as well as Jatropha’s financial and societal impacts of the region and the world.

The workshops will reveal Dr. Behl’s nine essential planting practices for effective Jatropha expansion. Such essential practices include:

Selections of elites of Jatropha for higher productivity per acre

Developing cost-effective commercial nurseries

Healthy practices to reduce incidence of diseases

Value addition to Jatropha projects with use of byproducts

Dr. Behl’s sessions will further explore and document the practical considerations of cultivation, management and business potential of Jatropha as a sustainable biofuel.

The track record of Dr. Behl reveals a “who’s who” of key Jatropha players including D1 Oils UK, Green Oil Energy Sciences, Tata Chemicals & Birla Group of Companies. All have benefited from Dr. Behl’s experience in Jatropha cultivation across a variety of soil types.

The workshops will also feature several other leading experts on Jatropha cultivation and markets in the region. As Dr. Behl added, “After attending these workshops, Jatropha practitioners will leave with the necessary knowledge and preparation to meet the new challenges of the Jatropha industry.”

In addition to gaining insights from world leaders in the Jatropha biofuel industry, participants at the Best Practices Jatropha Workshop series are encouraged to form vital business relationships within the community via six hours of quality networking with their fellow participants. The workshop in Mexico City on November 11-12 will also offer simultaneous Spanish translation for Spanish speaking participants as part of the workshop package.

Jatropha plant practitioners and project developers seeking to add value to their Jatropha biofuel projects should strongly consider attending these two popular workshops.

Diligent Energy Systems is an innovative company that produces biofuels from tropical plants: biodiesel from Jatropha Curcas, and bio-ethanol from waste from coffee production in Colombia.

Corporate social responsibility
Entrepreneur and founder Ruud van Eck attaches great value to sustainable entrepreneurship according to the principle of the three “P’s”: people; planet; and profit.

People - meaning what is socially fair for people inside and outside the company

Planet - ecologically sustainable

Profit - economic added value

Mission in her work
Diligent wants to contribute both to reduction of global warming, and to creation of employment in developing countries. The overall objective is triple profit: profit for society, for the environment, and an adequate profit for Diligent itself.

An honest fuel
The approach of Diligent has a tangible benefit: since Diligent gets its fuel from tropical crops in Tanzania and Colombia, Diligent contributes to employment and poverty reduction in these countries. Diligent offers farmers a fair price and ensures that their products will be bought, so that they can build a better future.

Local use or export?
Biofuels can be used locally, or be exported to Europe. For combating climate change it does not matter where biofuels are used, after all the Earth has only one atmosphere. Both markets have their own advantages:

Use in the land of production benefits the energy balance. Transporting fuel to Europe is not required. Furthermore, local use stimulates countries to develop their own economies in a sustainable way.

Export, on the other hand, is good for the trade balance of the country. Selling jatropha products internationally will generate more money for the Tanzanian economy than import of fossil fuel costs. Besides, energy demands in western countries is much higher. If the Netherlands wants to meet part of its fuel consumption through biofuels, import of oil from other countries will be unavoidable.

Diligent is convinced that both methods, in their own way, are in the interest of poor countries. Therefore, Diligent applies both: local use of bio-ethanol in Colombia and export of oil and biodiesel from Tanzania.

Speaker Profile
Ruud van Eck an entrepreneur, is the founder of Diligent Energy Systems. He built from scratch a company producing alternative fuels. Earlier, he was the director of a company in information and communication technology, Mr van Eck managed to successfully grow this company within a few years. After selling that company, he was determined to do something in alternative fuels. A big change in career, which he made with full conviction: “I believe in this product. The demand for alternative fuels is very large. Much larger than the supply.”

So many Jatropha projects are underway or planned for the next five years making the question “What makes a successful Jatropha project Tick” a very critical one for the industry as a whole!

Let’s just look at the statistics.

According to the report, “First Global Market Study on Jatropha” published by GEXSI, “the number and size of Jatropha projects currently being developed is increasing sharply”. The report projects that over “5 million hectares of Jatropha will be planted by 2010.”

That’s a lot of land and a lot of Jatropha and due to the large amount of resources vested in the success of these projects, understanding the factors and practices that will contribute to Jatropha’s commercial success is critical.

Here’s the hitch however, Jatropha is still relatively new, and there’s hardly any reliable information on the ‘how-tos’ of Jatropha project development and management.

Now that’s a void that the JatrophaWorld 2008 team is eager to fill.

We’ve always risen to the challenge of addressing the needs of the industry. So we sought out to answer the question, “What makes successful Jatropha Projects Tick?”

We did this by inviting three leading Jatropha authorities in the world to share their views and take your questions at our upcoming one hour *F*R*E*E webinar “Setting Up Successful Jatropha Projects”, which will be held on 30 September at 9am EST (USA), 3pm CET (Central Europe), 6.30pm IST (India), 9pm SST (Singapore).

“Setting Up Successful Jatropha Projects” will be chaired by Dr. R Rajagopal, author of the position paper “Best Practices for Long Term Jatropha Development” and features Mr. Thilo Zelt of GEXSI’s Global Market Study on Jatropha and Mr. Jamey Hadden, Director of Strategic Development at GreenEnergy Ltd, two leading Jatropha authorities sharing at JatrophaWorld Hamburg 2008.

ABOUT OUR WEBINAR PANEL

We are happy to announce the first member on our panel of experts sharing at the “Setting Up Successful Jatropha Projects” webinar. Mr. Thilo Zelt, from GEXSI, is part of the team that brought to the world the “First Global Market Study on Jatropha”. In the course of collecting data for this study, Mr. Zelt has familiarized himself with over 242 ongoing Jatropha projects from all over the world, and as his report specifies, that number is set to expand exponentially in the next two years.

So is it accurate to say that Mr. Zelt knows the Jatropha industry? We’d say YES! In fact, Mr. Zelt is also chairing the optional Jatropha Practitioners Workshop at JatrophaWorld Hamburg 2008 on 22 October to discuss how to set up and manage a Jatropha plantation.

Also on our panel is Mr. Jamey Hadden, Director of Strategic Development at GreenEnergy Ltd. It is fairly accurate to say that Mr. Hadden’s understanding of the Jatropha industry is unparalleled. Over the last three years, Mr. Hadden has been closely involved in over $20 million of successful placements (both private and public) for jatropha-specific ventures.

Mr. Hadden’s company, GreenEnergy (GEV) has the distinction of being Vietnam’s ‘First Mover’ and pioneer in Jatropha cultivation. Working closely with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development (MARD), Mr. Hadden and GEV have extensive experience in setting up and running Jatropha cultivation projects in new settings.

Mr. Hadden is ideally placed to give you first hand insights into the opportunities and challenges of starting up a new Jatropha venture!

You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity to develop your own Jatropha business further with Mr. Hadden’s insights at the “Setting Up Successful Jatropha Projects” webinar, and at JatrophaWorld Hamburg 2008, where he will be sharing his views at the Jatropha Investors Panel on the first day of the conference (20 October).

We are also happy to announce Dr. R Rajagopal as the chairman of “Setting Up Successful Jatropha Projects” webinar. Now we’re sure that’s a familiar name to all of you. Dr. Rajagopal burst into the Jatropha scene with his highly rated position paper “Jatropha as a Biodiesel Feedstock: A Strategic Analysis”, which was downloaded by over 2000 people from all over the world. Dr. Rajagopal recently released an update to his initial paper entitled “Best Practices for Long-Term Jatropha Development”, which has also created a tremendous buzz.

Dr. Raj, Mr. Zelt and Mr. Hadden will discuss KEY FACTORS for successful implementation of a Jatropha Projects and take questions from the audience on matters related to the implementation of a Jatropha project.

WHAT’S GOING TO BE COVERED AT THE WEBINAR?

The question “What makes a successful Jatropha project tick” is too broad, so for this webinar, our webinar chairmen decided to break it down to include the key issues and practices that will contribute to the answer.

Some of the critical questions that Dr. Rajagopal & Mr. Zelt will aim to answer include:

How can Jatropha be grown in a sustainable way?

Which is the better approach- Collective farming or Large Scale Jatropha projects?

What are key factors in deciding on strategies to be adopted by new Jatropha project developers?

What are the current risks & barriers to Jatropha investments?

Plus many more…

More critically, the webinar has been designed for YOU!

Have YOUR questions answered: We have arranged for listeners to submit their questions beforehand and have them answered directly by our panelists.

Debate and Analyze the issues that undermine Jatropha’s success:
Our live Q&A session will enable you to ask questions and CLARIFY your doubts to evaluate your own practices and approaches to your Jatropha project. You will be also be able to participate in the discussion about some of the issues and practices undermining Jatropha’s success, and examine if they can be overcome.

SIGNING UP FOR “Setting up Successful Jatropha Projects”

GreenEnergy (GEV) is Vietnam’s First Mover in commercial jatropha cultivation. For the last three years GEV has worked closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to determine both best practice and best planting material for jatropha cultivation in Vietnam. GEV is establishing a 100 hectare national center of excellence to complement its wide ranging trial plots throughout Vietnam.

Vietnam has approximately 5 million hectares of bare, open lands appropriate for jatropha and MARD has a stated goal of 300,000 hectares planted to jatropha by 2015. GEV is taking a measured approach to its expansion into these lands and through its trial plots and education programs will manage the expectations and interests of its stakeholders.

Building on its years of experience refining biodiesel from waste oil, GEV is now extracting oil (CJO) and producing biodiesel from jatropha for testing. There is a strong interest in understanding and testing CJO and/or biodiesel from leading technology and aviation firms from around the world.

Jatoil Ltd is a partner and investor in GEV. Jatoil Ltd. is a company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange with a mandate to develop sustainable renewable fuels. Its investment with GEV in Vietnam is part of its planned network of jatropha oil producing ventures throughout Asia. Jatoil supports this network with a coordinated approach to investment, supply chain relationships, technical and market support. With the transparency, rigor and due diligence required of a public company, Jatoil Ltd provides an attractive vehicle for investors in this sun-rise industry.

In addition to Mr. Hadden’s key role in attracting new investment to GreenEnergy’s jatropha business, he also acts as Business Alliance Manager for Jatoil Ltd. (ASX) investigating new jatropha business opportunities world-wide. Over the last three years, Mr. Hadden has been closely involved in over $20 million of successful placements (both private and public) for jatropha-specific ventures.

The Global Exchange for Social Investment (GEXSI) is an international organisation that mediates social investments in low-income regions around the world, with the aim to alleviate poverty. GEXSI was originally launched at the World Economic Forum (Davos) in 2001, under the auspices of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. GEXSI’s mission to assist social endeavours to move from being charity dependent projects to viable businesses is reflected in a dual structure: a Charity under English law (www.gexsi.org) and a limited liability partnership (www.gexsi.com) that provides professional development investment services.

We view Jatropha as a unique opportunity for triple-bottom-line investing, and have facilitated pro-poor Jatropha investments in Africa, Asia, and Latin America since 2005. In May, 2008, GEXSI completed its first worldwide market study on Jatropha which comprises a survey of more than 200 projects worldwide. The organization is a founding member of the Jatropha Sustainability Alliance and participates in various international multi-stakeholder dialogues on Jatropha such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels. GEXSI has build up partnerships with leading research institutions on Jatropha, and consults several Jatropha companies.

Speaker Profile
Andreas Renner heads The Global Exchange for Social Investment’s venture philanthropy unit, and is founder and managing partner of the organizations consultancy arm, GEXSI LLP. He holds a degree in international economics, and completed major PhD research on market-based approaches to sustainable development. Before joining GEXSI, Andreas worked for a German CSR consultancy firm based that advised multinational corporations stakeholder relations and conflict management. A major achievement at GEXSI is having built up GEXSI’s Jatropha deal-flow pipeline; Andreas is also co-founder of two Jatropha companies, and represents GEXSI in international Jatropha fora such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels. Andreas is also a director at ercolith gmbh, a German start-up engineering company that develops and markets earthquake resistant, energy efficient construction systems.

Overview of the presentation
Advocated originally as a first-best option for sustainable development, biofuels today are perceived by many as a major threat to food security, just to mention one key issue. The argument that Jatropha may have a positive “food footprint” due to rehabilitation of unused land and the frequent use of intercropping is not part of the current debate. The same applies to other potential benefits of tree-born energy crops of the semi-arid tropics.

The presentation provides information on the latest Jatropha developments and sustainability issues, based on the Global Jatropha Study which GEXSI prepared on behalf of WWF and the Roundtable for Sustainable Development earlier this year.

These results further underline the importance to raise awareness of the sustainability potential of Jatropha, and to measure its impact on the environment as well as on food production. GEXSI will, on occasion of the JatrophaWorld Conference in Hamburg, present the most recent industry response to these challenges: The Jatropha Sustainability Alliance, which is currently being set-up by leading Jatropha companies.

We have an established plant science and planting programme for Jatropha curcas, a robust, tropical oilseed bearing tree. Jatropha produces inedible oil feedstock for biodiesel and is able to make use of land not suitable for arable agriculture.
