Speaker Profile: Capt. Samai Jai-in, Specialist, Royal Thai Naval Dockyard

Dr. Jai-In has served as Member of the National Ethanol Committee (2000-2005), National Biofuel Development and Promotion Committee (2005-September 2006), Natural Gas Committee (Jan. 2005-Sept. 2006), Energy Standing Committee of the House of Parliament (2001-2006, 2008-present) and many other committees and working groups relating to the development issues of bioenergy programs. During 2005-2007 he also served as Executive Board Member of the National Metal and Materials Technology Center. His current roles involve both the legislative body (Energy Standing Committee) and the policy making mechanism through the National Oil Palm Policy Board and Advisory Board on Energy and Environment to the Deputy Prime-minister (Dr.Trairong Suwannakhiri).

Dr.Jai-In holds a B.Sc.Engineering (Hons) degree from Bristol University, M.Sc., Ph.D. degrees from Manchester University. He has also completed advanced courses from the Naval Command and Staff College and the Naval War College of the Royal Thai Naval Advanced Study Institute. He is a receipient of the Honour Prize of 2007 by the Royal Thai Navy for his service in Science, Technology and Environment and The Outstanding Alternative Energy Science Leadership Award 2009 by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Guilherme Nastari is currently the Director of the New Projects Department, DATAGRO, since 2006. He is also the Director of the Brazilian Sugar and Ethanol Exporters Association (AEXA), since 2009. Since 2006, he has been engaged in several Sugar and Ethanol Market Advisory Projects at DATAGRO.

DATAGRO is the largest ethanol and sugar consultancy in Brazil and one of the largestin the world.

As an ethanol and sugar consultancy, DATAGRO has assisted the Brazilian and other sovereign country governments in initiates related to energy planning (on ethanol, gasoline and biofuels), ethanol and sugar deregulation, trade negotiations and disputes. Archie Amarra is currently the Executive Director of the Philippine Sugar Millers Association, Inc. He is also a member of the Board of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), member of the Board of Trustees of the Sugar Industry Foundation, Inc. (SIFI), member of the Sugar Development Council of Philippine Sugar Research Foundation (Philsurin) and Coordinator of the Sugar Master Plan Foundation.

He was the Team Leader in the preparation of the Master Plan for the Sugar Industry. After months of research and consultations with the various players in the industry and government, the Plan was eventually published on June 2000.

With the key role that he is playing in the Philippine sugar industry, Mr. Amarra is in the forefront of the initiative to promote the development of the industry in the Philippines.

Didiek Goenadi graduated from Bogor Agriculture University in 1981 and after that he joined the Indonesia Biotechnology Research institute for Estate Crops. After three years of working at the institute, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA. He got MS and PhD degrees in 1986 and 1989, respectively.

During 2000-2003 he was Advisor to the Research & Technology Minister for Economic and Technological Affairs. In 2002-2007 he served as Executive Director of the Indonesian Research Institute for Estate Crops – Ministry of Agriculture. Since December 2007 he has been appointed as National Committee on Investment for Agribusiness Affairs – Investment Coordinating Board. Starting from January 2011 he also serves as Commissioner of PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (a state-owned plantation holding company) and from March 2011 as Advisory Team Leader for PT Pusri Holding (a state-owned fertilizer holding Company).

At LMC, he also is responsible for the company’s extensive work in the sugar, starch and ethanol sectors. As well as directing projects for clients in the private and public sector, he oversees studies on benchmarking of agricultural raw material prices, production costs, technical performance and profitability.

Before joining LMC in 1990, he worked for four years for an international trade house, where he managed the company’s commodities research department. Mr Todd has two degrees in Economics from the University of Sussex in the UK.

Dr Hassan Kamel is currently the Chairman and Managing Director of Egyptian Sugar & Integrated Industries Co. (ESIIC). His career with the company started since 1972 where he started as a mechanical engineer and worked his way up.

He is Member of Board of Delta Sugar Company, Nobaria for Sugar and Refining Co and the Institute of Sugar Technology Research in Egypt.

He has been instrumental in implementing sugar expansion lines for these sugar companies and also executed the building five sugar factories in Islamic republic of Iran from the beginning of discussion and pursuit manufacturing till running and delivery of the project successfully.
